Christchurch hill climb cup race

Right from the word go the pace didn’t go below 55kph. For the first 15km with all 50 guys lapping it through, it was hard, fast and intense, but I still had to conserve energy for the 20km hill climb though.
We hit the bottom of the hill and the pace dropped, so I went right to the front and lifted the pace, head down and driving it! The bunch strung out then split into lots of groups I got 2km up the mountain before having a good look back to see what damage had been done. I was already stuffed and still had 18km to go up the mountain that had switch backs and was cut into the side of a mountain with amazing views. Then Michael Vink just clicked down a few gears and stood up an rode away leaving me and 5 others to race up the rest of the climb… with 3 km to go and on the steepest part of the climb me and a subway guy got dropped from the 3 others. My legs felt like they were on fire! I paced myself to try and get on to the back of the 3 guys that were a few seconds up the road, but I couldn’t do it. Sam Horgan had gone, so it was a matter of going as hard as I could along the summit to take out 5th place.

Thanks so much to Avanti plus Whangarei for giving me all their support!

Cheers Ben.
